Myxomatosis in Pontesbury!
05 March 2008

A wild rabbit with myxomatosis infection was found in a garden in Pontesbury last week.   This disease in almost always fatal in unvaccinated rabbits and is spread by midges and fleas.   The Telford area saw a dreadful outbreak last year and, predictably, we are likely to see it this year, especially as the weather warms up.   Vaccinated rabbits are well protected, although some may develop a mild form of the disease if exposed to it,   Rabbits should be vaccinated every 6 months when the risk is high.

This is a dreadful disease killing rabbits with a ghastly set of symptoms : swollen ears, eyes and genitals, eventually leading to a slow and painful death.  There is no treatment.

We are encouraging everyone to vaccinate their rabbits BEFORE midges become active.  Indoor rabbits should also be vaccinated
