Neutering

Dogs

We strongly recommend that dogs are neutered.

Male dogs

Castration of male dogs who are not intended for breeding should be done at about 5-6 months of age.   This helps to prevents antisocial behaviour such as dominant aggresion toward other dogs and people.   It curbs territory marking (urinating on every lamp post)  It prevents testicular cancer which is quite common in older dogs and it cuts down the incidence of prostate disease. It also helps to reduce unwanted pregnancies

Bitches

Any bitch who is not intended for breeeding should be spayed.   This prevents pyometra (infection of the womb) which is common, serious and life threatenning.   It can help to reduce mammary cancers, depending on when it is done.   It prevents the problems associated with heat and unwanted pregnancies.   We advise spaying either before the first or second season but we need to discuss the pros and cons of timing with you.

Neutered dogs and bitches DO NOT GET FAT unless they are fed too much.

Cats

Male and female cats should be neutered at about 5-6 months of age before the females come into season.

Neutering prevents unwanted kittens

It also helps reduce fighting, prevents sexually transmitted disease and reduces spraying.   It usually makes a cat more likley to relate to his or her humans.
